چکیده
We report the first direct observational evidence for alignment of galaxy spin axes with the local tidal shear field. We measured quantitatively the strength of this directional correlation of disk galaxies in the Tully catalog with the local shear field reconstructed from PSCz galaxies. The observed correlation of galaxy spin orientations with the intrinsic shear field is found to be significant at more than 4σ. Our result is consistent with the linear tidal torque model, and supports the idea that the present galaxy spins may be used as a probe of primordial tidal shear and mass density fields.

We demonstrate that the null hypothesis of random galaxy alignments relative to the shear frame can be rule...

We are carrying out a search for Lyα emitting galaxies at z = 6.5 employing slitless spectroscopy at the VLT. In our 43 arcmin field we find three isolated single emission lines with SEDs consistent with line emitting galaxies at z = 6.5.

The diverse isotopic and elemental signatures produced in different nucleosynthetic sites are passed on to successive generations of stars. By tracing these chemical signatures back through the stellar populations of the Galaxy, it is possible to unravel its nucleosynthetic history and even to study stars which are now extinct. This review considers recent applications of ”stellar genetics” to ...
